Summary of KC3 Positions on Legislation Currently Under Consideration by the Kentucky State Legislature

Please take a few moments to look over the following information regarding legislation that is currently before the Kentucky General Assembly.  We hope you will agree with our assessment of these bills and invest a little time to help us convince our representatives in government to do the right thing.  We simply can’t further or even retain the right to self-defense without your involvement in the process.  Please find your Member of the Senate or House at the Kentucky Legislature's "Who's Who" page or on our Legislative Contact Information page and don’t let them forget the value of this inherent right and our willingness to protect it.

SUPPORT

BR 239 - AN ACT relating to concealed deadly weapons.

Sponsor - Senator Jack Westwood

This bill seeks to amend KRS 527.020, relating to carrying concealed deadly weapons, to permit carrying a concealed deadly weapon in a motor vehicle in any compartment or box regularly installed in the vehicle by its manufacturer, regardless of whether the compartment or box is locked, unlocked, or has no locking mechanism.  Currently, the law only provides the exception for the "glove compartment" which in many vehicles not longer exists by that name specifically.

It should not be necessary for someone to consider the specific wording of an owners manual as it relates to glove compartments when purchasing a vehicle.  As the law stands now, we are basically allowing auto manufacturers to dictate where or even IF you can handily carry a weapon in your car without resorting to obtaining a CCDW license.

We would rather do away with the crime of carrying a concealed deadly weapon altogether but this legislation is a step in the right direction.  Please contact your Senator and ask him/her to please co-sponsor BR 239 or, at the least, support it fully if it comes before them for a vote.
